Return Your Junk Phone, Get a Tree Planted

Every time you return a junk mobile phone to a Nokia dealer, the firm will thank you by planting a tree, apart from recycling that phone in an eco-friendly manner.

Announcing the initiative on World Environment Day, Ambrish Bakaya, director of corporate affairs in Nokia India, said the firm had already tied up with two NGOs in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to plant 22,000 trees. The programme would soon be extended to the top 15 cities of the country, he added.

"We already have 1,300 bins at our main dealers' shops around the country where people can throw in their junk phones," Bakaya said. The mobile phone manufacturer with the largest market share in India has been getting a good response. "Now we have tied up with an NGO called Ahimsa in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu to plant 12,000 trees, and with Bangalore's Rotary Midtown to plant 10,000 trees in educational institutions around that city."

Nokia has also been working to strengthen the laws on recycling of e-waste, which threatens to become a major problem in India.Saying that the firm was working with the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology, the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Department of Telecommunications to put together stronger guidelines on the subject, Bakaya added: "We welcome any step which helps strengthen e-waste management and creates awareness about the need to recycle e-waste in an eco-friendly manner".

2 New XpressMusic Handsets launched by Nokia

Nokia has added two more devices to its music range of handsets: the 5220 and the 5320 XpressMusic. "Today's additions to the XpressMusic range up the ante with new ways for consumers to access their media, as well as interact and share content with friends and communities anytime, anywhere," said Jo Harlow, Vice President, LIVE category, Nokia. The 5320 features 3G social entertainment capabilities with Web 2.0 access. A new voice-controlled Say and Play feature lets you say the name of an artist or song to play it. According to Nokia, the handset can deliver up to 24 hours of playback time.Other features include an audio chip for hi-fi sound quality, extendable memory up to 8GB, HS-USB for fast music transfer, and HSDPA for fast access to data. It also allows for N-Gage gaming in the convenient landscape mode.

The other handset (Nokia 5220 XpressMusic) seems to have a bit of a lopsided design. No, it’s not your eyes playing tricks; the phone is actually designed that way. It has a built-in lanyard that makes it easy to carry around. Other features include dedicated XpressMusic keys, a 3.5mm audio jack, and support for external memory via microSD cards.

These handsets are equipped with 2 megapixel cameras and FM radios. Both are compatible with the recently launched Nokia Music Store, where consumers can choose from more than 2 million tracks and browse, download, stream and sync, either to a PC or side-load directly to a mobile device.Nokia 5320 and 5220 XpressMusic are expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2008 with estimated retail prices of Rs 13,980 (€220) and Rs 10,166 (€160) respectively, before taxes and subsidies.Source

Nokia Launches N810 WiMax Edition

Nokia has unveiled its newest Nseries device, the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet - WiMAX Edition, Nokia's first device engineered to take advantage of new wide-area high-speed mobile WiMAX networks. This pocket-sized device lets consumers enjoy an open Internet experience, allowing for access to the Internet without barriers, while on the go. The N810 allows users to easily and quickly access all of their favorite Internet services beyond local area hot spots.

WiMAX is a standards-based wireless broadband technology that delivers an open Internet experience similar to that of fixed broadband technologies with typical data download speeds of up to 2-4 Mbps per user with peak download speeds of up to 10 Mbps. Unlike current single point local area technologies like Wi-Fi, which have a range of a few hundred feet, WiMAX networks consist of a number of interconnected base stations, each with a radius of up to 2-3 miles, that allow for handoffs from one base station to another as users move about a region or metro area. Additionally, WiMAX networks integrate technology designed to maximize the quality of service for each subscriber."By delivering the kind of open Internet experience that consumers previously only expected on a desktop PC, the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition is a compelling example of how next generation broadband wireless technology will not only change the way people think about the Internet, it will change the very nature of the Internet itself," said Ari Virtanen, Vice President of Convergence Products for Nokia.

Along with a full-featured web browser, powered by Mozilla, that takes full advantage of the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition's large 4.13 inch touch screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a variety of popular web-based services are also supported. To keep connected while on-the-go, a number of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Instant Messaging (IM) clients are available, including Skype, Google Talk, and Gizmo5, which can also take advantage of the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition's built-in web cam for video calls. A client for the popular Rhapsody online music service is also available. An active developer community has also emerged around the Linux-based Internet Tablet platform, creating additional applications - from games to productivity tools. The Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition also comes with built-in GPS, an integrated media player and 2 GB of internal memory, expandable to a full 10 GB with microSD memory cards and when not in range of a WiMAX network, the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition can also access the Internet over Wi-Fi or via conventional cellular data networks by pairing to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth technology.

The new upgraded OS2008 introduces new features to the platform, including an enhanced e-mail client, support for Chinese character rendering in the browser and RSS feeds and Seamless Software Update functionality to eliminate manual software updates. While standard on the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition, current owners of Nokia N810 and N800 Internet Tablets with earlier operating systems will be able to upgrade their device to the revised operating system for free during the second quarter of 2008.The Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition is expected to be available in the United States during the summer of 2008 in areas where WiMAX connectivity is available.Source

Nokia’s slim and classy looking 6300 has just got an upgrade. 6300i is what it’s being called and it’s going to be loaded with features that include Wi-Fi and VoIP support. Of course you may also remember the Nokia 6301 that was launched recently that also came with Wi-Fi with the addition of UMA technology. Somehow though it didn't seem like the handset caught on too strong. Oh well, three's a charm. Apart from all that the 6300i still retains the S40 OS.

The 6300i may retain the same design as its predecessor but thankfully it’s distinguishable by its Graphite Grey color that’s quite catchy. Like the 6300 the 6300i comes with a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth with A2DP support, miniUSB connectivity, stereo FM radio and a 2.5mm earphone socket for the headset. It also supports external memory with microSD cards. There’s another handy feature that the handset comes preinstalled with - Nokia Maps. Though don’t get your hopes up guys it doesn’t have in-built GPS, you will have to use an external adapter. Of course the 6300i also supports GPRS and EDGE.
The Nokia 6300i will be available for about Rs. 10,914 (175 Euro) and that’s before taxes. It should be released in the second quarter of 2008. Stay Tuned.Source

Indian Mobile TV Market sailing high

"India's mobile television market will be worth $360 million by the end of this year," says a report by Springboard Research, a Singapore-based IT market research firm. Courtesy mobile TV, users can view regular television programs on mobile phones and other mobile devices. It marries two dominant consumption trends of entertainment and mobile telephony in the country. According to the Springboard report, as many as 84 percent of users are waiting for an affordable mobile TV service in the country. News, sports, music videos, and game shows have emerged as preferred choices for this service. According to Ravi Shekhar Pandey, manager (Syndicated Research) of Springboard Research, "The market is ripe for the launch of mobile TV services, and we believe that India will have around 12 million mobile TV subscribers within the first year of launch of service." Pandey added that a majority of mobile users in the country are interested in trying out mobile TV, and would invest in new handsets for using the service. That this willingness is definitely a positive sign for those considering offering mobile TV in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing mobile services market. Going a step further, the report recommends that those companies planning to roll out the service should consider offering on-demand, pay-per-view option that will not be attached to a monthly subscription offer. Presently, Doordarshan is the only player in this field. However, the report states that in recent months, the market has witnessed increased activities from various stakeholders, including technology providers, network equipment vendors, and mobile service providers like Nokia, Samsung, Spice Telecom, and Qualcomm.Source

Nanotech Mobile designed by Nokia and Cambridge

Nokia may not be too funky with their mobile phone designs for mass production but you have to admit, their concept designs are something that look, quite literally, out of this world. Morph, a joint Nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) - was launched today alongside the "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph features in both the exhibition catalog and on MoMA's official website.
Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces. Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, commented: "Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible".
Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory, Nokia, commented: "We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience."The partnership between Nokia and the University of Cambridge was announced in March, 2007 - an agreement to work together on an extensive and long-term programme of joint research projects. NRC together with the University of Cambridge have decided to work on more projects that, to begin with, are centered on nanotechnology.
Elements of Morph might be available to integrate into handheld devices within 7 years, though initially only at the high-end. However, nanotechnology may one day lead to low cost manufacturing solutions, and offers the possibility of integrating complex functionality at a low price. Hopefully it won't take that long.Source

Nokia Suitcase

The new year has come and the year has proceeded, but there is some good news especially for those who bought Nokia Xpressmusic phones.
Why?
Maybe You are wondering.......
Heres why....

This kit contains the Nokia 5610 and 5310 phones, with a host of products to aid the music experience. Apparently, the suitcase was just a teaser and the products it contains not yet launched in India. After a lot of digging it was found out that JBL might be interested in bringing its docking station (present in the suitcase) to India.

JBL Docking Station

The docking station is primarily for the Nokia 5310 Xpressmusic phone. The phone fits snugly onto the given space and the buttons on the station sort of latch on to the ones given on the phone, allowing you to control playback and volume from the docking station itself. The best thing about the docking station is that it also charges your phone. The sound quality is something to kill for – it’s brilliantly loud. The lows are well-rounded and have a lot of character. You can feel the thump, and if we are talking about a small room, well let's just say you can have a blast. The volume can be cranked up to the max without much visible jarring. Once the 5310 is connected to the docking station, you can control playback, forward/rewind and volume from the external controls itself. Also with the converter (generally provided) you can blast music from any Xpressmusic phone, or even a regular MP3 player. So you need not limit the docking station usability to the 5310.

Altec Lansing Speakers

Altec Lansing speakers are in all fairness decent. This, however, is when compared to the docking station. For a small room, you can have a decent output, provided you do not blast the volume. The bass lacks warmth, and jars when the volume is pumped up high. This is because it doesn't have proper drivers to drive the sound.Mind you, this isn’t a docking station. It has a 3.5mm cable sticking out, which can attached to any MP3 player. From the way it was packed, we got the impression that the speaker was clubbed with the 5610. Well, if it is, it’s heavily undermining the 5610!

Philips Headphones

The Philips headset included in this ‘spy kit’ of sorts is quite light and easy to use. It can be folded and carried around easily. The sound quality is really good; you can comfortably listen to music with minimal distraction even while commuting. The cushioning around the ears helps to keep out ambient sounds. You will have to use it with a Nokia headphone adapter, as the wire is too short.

Accessories

The Nokia kit comes with plenty of accessories for mobiles and dock stations. What’s included is a mobile charger, a DC charger for the JBL dock, an additional Nokia adapter, 3.5mm to 3.5mm and 2.5mm to 3.5mm cords that can be used to connect the phones to the docks as well as other devices. So the Nokia case is quite well equipped – not just for the 5610 and 5310 but for any mobile or media device that use 3.5mm universal connectors for music output. Unfortunately the kit as a whole is not available in India. Then again, would you really buy it?We do know that the JBL dock will be available officially soon, but there's no definite word on price and availability.
