Gmail banned by Iran

Iran has banned Google's Gmail service from the country, saying that it was launching a state run alternative to the popular web-based email site that would "build trust between people and the government", the Wall Street Journal reported.

The paper said Wednesday the move was announced by Iran's telecommunications agency, but that it was unclear whether it had yet had an effect on the availability of Gmail in Iran.

The Gmail ban comes amid high tension between the government and the opposition, with the regime increasingly tracking the efforts of opposition supporters on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

The report said that Gmail is one of the most popular of the western mail services in Iran, especially among young people who are among the strongest supporters of the opposition.

Google had no immediate comment on the report.

Logitech Wireless Desktop Offers 3 Years of Battery Life

Logitech has introduced the its Wireless Desktop MK710 - a keyboard-and-mouse combination that features up to three years of battery life.

"No one thinks about changing batteries until they have to, but when that time comes, it can stop you in your tracks," said Rory Dooley,Logitech ’s senior vice president and general manager of the Control Devices business unit. "With its industry-first three-year battery life for a combo, you might just forget theLogitech Wireless Desktop MK710 uses batteries at all."

The combination of three years of battery life and the leave-in Logitech Unifying receiver ensures the Wireless Desktop MK710 is always ready. To achieve three years of battery life, Logitech Advanced 2.4 GHz wireless technology transmits information much faster and more efficiently than typical 27 MHz wireless systems. Furthermore, by reducing the amount of time the keyboard and mouse remain in active mode when left idle, the Wireless Desktop MK710 conserves power and minimizes lag when you resume typing or mousing.

First introduced in August 2009, the tiny Logitech Unifying receiver is so small it can stay in your laptop when you’re moving around. And, a single receiver can be paired with up to six Unifying-compatibleLogitech keyboards and mice — freeing up valuable USB ports.

The low-profile keyboard features Logitech Incurve keys and a cushioned palm rest. With their concave design, Incurve keys support the shape of the fingertips, while helping guide fingers to the right keys. In addition, the soft, rounded edges make it easy for fingers to glide from key to key. An LCD dashboard gives at-a-glance status for Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, Num Lock and battery life.

The midsize laser mouse delivers smooth tracking on a variety of surfaces and and Hyper-fast scrolling lets users fly through long documents. The mouse’s sculpted, right-hand shape guides to a naturally comfortable position and places the three customizable thumb buttons within easy reach, so users can move quickly between Web pages or applications (after downloading ofLogitech software).

The Logitech Wireless Desktop MK710 is expected to be available in Europe beginning in February 2010 and in the U.S. beginning in April 2010, for a suggested retail price of $99.99 (U.S.).
