Data Recovery Group

Data recovery is the process of salvaging data from damaged, failed, corrupted, or inaccessible secondary storage media when it cannot be accessed normally. Often the data are being salvaged from storage media such as hard disk drives, storage tapes, CDs, DVDs, RAID, and other electronics. Recovery may be required due to physical damage to the storage device or logical damage to the file system that prevents it from being mounted by the host operating system.

The most common "data recovery" issue involves an operating system (OS) failure (typically on a single-disk, single-partition, single-OS system) like mac data recovery, where the goal is to simply copy all wanted files to another disk. This can be easily accomplished with a Live CD, most of which provide a means to 1) mount the system drive, 2) mount and backup disk or media drives, and 3) move the files from the system to the backup with a file manager or optical disc authoring software. Further, such cases can be mitigated by disk partitioning and consistently moving valuable data files to a different partition from the replaceable OS system files.

The second type involves a disk-level failure such as a compromised file system, disk partition, or a hard disk failure —in each of which the data cannot be easily read. Depending on the case, solutions involve repairing the file system, partition table or MBR, or hard disk recovery techniques ranging from software-based recovery of corrupted data to hardware replacement on a physically damaged disk. These last two typically indicate the permanent failure of the disk, thus "recovery" means sufficient repair for a one-time recovery of files.

A third type involves the process of retrieving files that have been deleted from a storage media. Although there is some confusion as to the term, the term "data recovery" may be used to refer to such cases in the context of forensic purposes or spying or there maybe a server data recovery required of some kind when the main server fails to function or crashes somehow.

Recovering data after physical damage

A wide variety of failures can cause physical damage to storage media. CD-ROMs can have their metallic substrate or dye layer scratched off; hard disks can suffer any of several mechanical failures, such as head crashes and failed motors; tapes can simply break. Physical damage always causes at least some data loss, and in many cases the logical structures of the file system are damaged as well. This causes logical damage that must be dealt with before any files can be salvaged from the failed media.

Most physical damage cannot be repaired by end users. For example, opening a hard disk in a normal environment can allow airborne dust to settle on the platter and become caught between the platter and the read/write head, causing new head crashes that further damage the platter and thus compromise the recovery process. Furthermore, end users generally do not have the hardware or technical expertise required to make these repairs. Consequently, costly data recovery companies are often employed to salvage important data. These firms often use "Class 100" / ISO-5 cleanroom facilities to protect the media while repairs are being made. (Any data recovery firm without a pass certificate of ISO-5 or better will not be accepted by hard drive manufacturers for warranty purposes.)

Recovery techniques

Recovering data from physically-damaged hardware can involve multiple techniques. Some damage can be repaired by replacing parts in the hard disk. This alone may make the disk usable, but there may still be logical damage. A specialized disk-imaging procedure is used to recover every readable bit from the surface. Once this image is acquired and saved on a reliable medium, the image can be safely analysed for logical damage and will possibly allow for much of the original file system to be reconstructed.

Breast Implants

Until now, I have writing about gadgets, gadgets and more gadgets. I guess that is the way to go because this is a gadget blog. But today, I decide to write something more helpful to people and especially for girls.

Breast implants are used to alter the size and shape of a woman's breasts (known as breast augmentation, breast enlargement, mammoplasty enlargement, augmentation mammoplasty or the common slang term boob job) for cosmetic reasons; to reconstruct the breast (e.g. after a mastectomy; or to correct congenital chest wall deformities), or as an aspect of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery. Pectoral implants are a related device used in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the male chest wall. A breast tissue expander is a temporary breast implant used during staged breast reconstruction procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States. In 2007, 347,254 breast augmentation procedures were performed in the U.S according to statistics collected by the American Society of Plastic Surgery.

There are two primary types of breast implants: saline-filled and silicone-gel-filled implants. Saline breast implants have a silicone elastomer shell filled with sterile saline liquid. Silicone breast implants have a silicone shell filled with a viscous silicone gel. There have been several alternative types of breast implants that were developed, such as polypropylene string or soy oil, but these are no longer manufactured.

Breast implants are used primarily for:

  • primary reconstruction (to replace breast tissue that has been removed due to cancer or trauma or that has failed to develop properly due to a severe breast abnormality)
  • revision-reconstruction (revision surgery to correct or improve the result of an original breast reconstruction surgery)
  • primary augmentation (to increase breast size for cosmetic reasons)
  • revision-augmentation (revision surgery to correct or improve the result of an original breast augmentation surgery)

A 2007 Swedish and US longitudinal study found that women who get cosmetic breast implants are nearly three times as likely to commit suicide as other women. No notable increase was seen in the first 10 years after surgery, but 10 to 19 years after, risk was 4.5 times higher, and six times higher after 20 years, compared with the expected suicide rate.

The same study found that women with breast implants also had a tripled risk of death from alcohol and drug use. Seven studies have been made connecting breast implants to a higher rate of suicide.

Researchers believe that breast implants themselves did not directly cause the higher suicide rate amongst the women who had them. The hypothesis from research is that women with an inclination towards psychopathology (psychological problems) are more likely to get breast implants in the first place.

For example, in one Danish study (Jacobsen, 2004), eight percent of women who underwent cosmetic breast augmentation were found to have a history of psychiatric hospitalisation before surgery.

So before going through such a procedure all the necessary precautions should be taken and the person undergoing should have made a complete research about all the pros and cons about this kind of a surgery.

Want to open Word 2007 .docx files in Word 2003? Try this....

Office 2007 has a little different design than Office 2003 and some of us liked the old version and didn't upgrade. Because Word 2007 saves files with the default extension .docx which is not compatible with Word 2003, there were a lot of misunderstandings regarding extensions.

But Microsoft came with a solution for this problem called Microsoft Compatibility Pack.

To install it follow this steps:

1. Go here and download the pack.

2. After you saved it on your computer open it and after you read the license click Continue.

3. Once the process is done , you can enjoy opening .docx files on Word 2003.

File Extension LWP

A filename extension is a suffix to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the encoding convention (file format) of its contents. In some operating systems (for example Unix) it is optional, while in some others (such as DOS) it is a requirement. Some operating systems limit the length of the extension (such as DOS and OS/2, to three characters) while others (such as Unix) do not. Some operating systems (for example RISC OS) do not use file extensions. Unix accepts the separator dot as a legal character but does not give it a special recognition on the OS level.

When one uses a computer it is very necessary to know about file extensions because it helps in the better functioning of the computer. One such file extension is the File Extension LWP. One such program that uses this kind of extension are Lotus Word Pro. Word Pro is the word processor component of the Lotus SmartSuite office suite. The Word Pro .lwp files are text files created with this software, comparable to the Microsoft .doc or the OpenOffice odt. Both Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org support the importation of .lwp files, though the imports seldom go perfectly. It's not unusual to lose some formatting, font styles, and embedded objects. To solve these problems regarding File Extension LWP it is very essential to have the proper knowledge.

Many people don't know this but when we have a software installed on our PC for playing a certain kind of file which is the default software fir that kind of files and then suppose we install another similar software which plays the same kind of files then there might be some registry problems which may result in the improper functioning of the softwares and there might be problems in playing the file altogether. ATo avoid these kind of problems it is very necessary to have some kind of a registry cleaner ehich rectifies these kind of registry problems. One very helpful registry cleaner availlable is Driver Cure which is very simple to use and it is also very effective.

Samsung 12MP Handset With Optical Zoom Pictures Emerge

It was a little while ago that we got wind of Samsung’s upgrade to the 8 megapixel Pixon, the Pixon12 or M8910 with its 12 megapixel lens. The handset must be still warm off the production line and Samsung has already decided that it’s time for an upgrade. The M8920 is the next 12MP camera phone the company is apparently gearing up to launch according to reports.

While it may seem like it’s just another camera phone with a high megapixel count, Samsung has decided that that was not nearly enough and has upped the specs a bit for the handset’s prime feature. The M8920 is going to be equipped with, wait for it, drum roll please... 3x OPTICAL zoom! A lot of readers have been asking about optical zoom being incorporated and here it is. Aside from that it will also have both LED and Xenon flashes. It makes me wonder what’s going to become of the digicam market.

According to the same reports, other feature will include - internal GPS and Wi-Fi (with support for DLNA). The handset will be using Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz UI and come loaded with 8 Gigs of internalmemory. There’s no other information on any of the other features.

Pricing is yet to be talked of as well. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to see the device at Communicasia later in the month and we’ll have more information on it then, so stay tuned.

Cellphone Industry to go Greener

Cellphone maker Sony Ericsson unveiled on Thursday two handset models it said are more eco-friendly, and said it expects the new Naite model to be one of its key volume drivers in coming quarters. The world's largest consumer electronics sector by volume, the cellphone industry is looking increasingly at how to tap consumers' increasing interest in more environmentally friendly phones. The new Sony Ericsson models - the more advanced C901 GreenHeart and a mass-market model Naite - will be sold in smaller packages and have user manuals that are electronic. The devices use more recycled materials and consume less energy. The company said it aims to roll out similar features across its portfolio in 2010 and 2011. "We are not aiming at a niche segment. We are taking this to mainstream and to a bigger audience," Mats Pellback-Scharp, head of sustainability at Sony Ericsson told Reuters in an interview. "Naite is the lowest cost 3Gphone in Sony Ericsson's portfolio and we expect it to be one of the biggest volume drivers in end-2009 to early 2010," Pellback-Scharp said.

Money-losing Sony Ericsson, the world's fifth-biggest handset maker, is in need of new models to renew its offering since the appeal of the years-old Sony-branded Cybershot cameraphones and Walkman musicphones has faded. The role of greener products is increasing rapidly in the cellphone industry, with a recent ABI Research survey saying nearly half of U.S. consumers are likely to be influenced by suppliers' green credentials when purchasing devices. Sony Ericsson said on Thursday it targets a cut of 20 percent of its carbon dioxide emissions by 2015.

The handset industry is closely followed by environmental organisations around the world due to its large scale. More than 1 billion phones are sold globally each year, which requires the use of sales boxes, add-ons and tonnes of rare raw materials. Samsung Electronics and ZTE launched phone models in February which use solar power. The world's top cellphone maker, Nokia, started to renew its packaging in 2006, and has said it saved 100 million euros ($142.9 million) in less than a year. Sony Ericsson said its new models will use at least 50 percent recycled plastics - similar to Nokia's 3110 Evolve model, which the Finnish firm introduced last year. Last year Nokia's chief executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, showed a phone made fully of recycled materials at the Mobile World Congress trade show, but the research project has not made it into production. "It looks three to five years out to see how recycled materials themselves might be used to make devices. We hope that elements from this research project will be things we can take into production and deploy across our product range in the coming years," said a Nokia spokeswoman.

Return Your Junk Phone, Get a Tree Planted

Every time you return a junk mobile phone to a Nokia dealer, the firm will thank you by planting a tree, apart from recycling that phone in an eco-friendly manner.

Announcing the initiative on World Environment Day, Ambrish Bakaya, director of corporate affairs in Nokia India, said the firm had already tied up with two NGOs in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to plant 22,000 trees. The programme would soon be extended to the top 15 cities of the country, he added.

"We already have 1,300 bins at our main dealers' shops around the country where people can throw in their junk phones," Bakaya said. The mobile phone manufacturer with the largest market share in India has been getting a good response. "Now we have tied up with an NGO called Ahimsa in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu to plant 12,000 trees, and with Bangalore's Rotary Midtown to plant 10,000 trees in educational institutions around that city."

Nokia has also been working to strengthen the laws on recycling of e-waste, which threatens to become a major problem in India.Saying that the firm was working with the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology, the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Department of Telecommunications to put together stronger guidelines on the subject, Bakaya added: "We welcome any step which helps strengthen e-waste management and creates awareness about the need to recycle e-waste in an eco-friendly manner".

File Extension QFX

A filename extension is a suffix to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the encoding convention (file format) of its contents. In some operating systems (for example Unix) it is optional, while in some others (such as DOS) it is a requirement. Some operating systems limit the length of the extension (such as DOS and OS/2, to three characters) while others (such as Unix) do not. Some operating systems (for example RISC OS) do not use file extensions. Unix accepts the separator dot as a legal character but does not give it a special recognition on the OS level.

File extension QFX can be considered a type of metadata. They are commonly used to infer information about the way data might be stored in the file. The exact definition, giving the criteria for deciding what part of the file name is its extension, belongs to the rules of the specific filesystem used; usually the extension is the substring which follows the last occurrence, if any, of the dot character (e.g. txt is the extension of the filename readme.txt, html the extension of mysite.index.html).

On file systems of mainframe systems such as MVS, VMS, and PC systems such as CP/M and derivative systems such as MS-DOS, the File Extension QFX is a separate namespace from the filename. Under Microsoft's DOS and Windows, some extensions, including EXE, COM, BAT, and CMD, indicate that a file is an executable program. This is different from Unix-like operating systems, where a suffix is not a separate namespace, and where even having a suffix is voluntary, as file system permissions are used to decide whether a file is executable.

With the advent of graphical user interfaces, the issue of file management and interface behavior arose. Microsoft Windows allowed multiple applications to be associated with a given extension, and different actions were available for selecting the required application, such as a context menu offering a choice between viewing, editing or printing the file.

Pre-OS X versions of the Mac OS disposed of filename extensions entirely, instead using a file type code to identify the file format. Additionally, a creator code was specified to determine which application would be launched when the file's icon was double-clicked. Mac OS X, however, uses filename suffixes, as well as type and creator codes, as a consequence of being derived from the Unix-like NEXTSTEP operating system, which did not have type or creator code support in its file system.

File extensions problems are a very normal thing that one faces while operating a computer are due to the registry which undergo changes as soon as a new software or game or any other thing is installed or uninstalled. A software generally when installed becomes the default software for that kind of file and when another similar software is installed then again the default software changes. This brings about changes in the registry and brings about registry errors and honce File Extension problems. This is why it is very necessary to know about all this and have a registry cleaner whoch cleans all the registry errors. Some common file extensions are PDF,DAT,PPS,DLL,XLS,3GP,FLV,DMG,MP4,BIN,RAR.
