Make Your HDD Faster

Many people do not know this, but it is actually possible to speed up your Hard Disk Drive. To speed up your hard disk speed you need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made by the disk. This tip is only recommended if you have a primary memory (RAM) 256MB or higher.

Buffer Configuration

1. Click Start -> Run...
2. Type sysedit and hit Enter.

This command will open your System Configuration Editor, which has four windows open: SYSTEM.INI, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI and AUTOEXEC.BAT.

3. Click on the SYSTEM.INI window, place the cursor after [386enh] and hit Enter.

4. Type Irq14=4096. Make sure you type it correctly because the command is case sensitive.

5. Go to File -> Save in order to save the new configuration.
6. Close the System Configuration Editor and restart you computer. The most speed improvement is visible with IDE drives, however there are reports that this tweak also does good for SCSI disks. In any case, it won't harm your system, so why not give it a try yourself.

Apple, Microsoft And Google Sued

A law suit has emerged, that could have a sweeping impact on multiple software majors and a host of smaller graphical suite-makers. This law suit has been filled by Cygnus Systems and accuses major companies like Adobe, Google, and Microsoft of having violated their patent by using thumbnails, which Cygnus claims it invented.

To this purpose they have patented a broad-base technology which states "a method and system for storing, navigating, and accessing files within an operating system through the use of a graphical thumbnail representing the video display of the active document within the active application."

This directly affects just about every other graphical software that utilizes thumbnails. Be it Apple’s cover flow or Windows explorer, the number of software that utilizes this particular feature is too vast to list. It even shows up in hardware like mobile phones, iPods, PMPS and all sorts of other devices. If this case goes to court and goes in favor of the company, they could very wind up as one of the richest on the planet. In such cases normally not only is the victor entitled to current expenditures and costs, it can also sue for past damages caused by the use of their patent.

Get A Better File Transfer Speed in Windows Vista

People who started using Windows Vista have noticed that file transfer speed is much lower from hat in Windows XP

. It seems that Remote Differential Compression is causing this problem. Remote Differential Compression (RDC) is a client-server synchronization protocol that allows the contents of two files to be synchronized by communicating only the difference between them. The thing you have to do for a better file transfer speed is to disable this feature. Here are the steps to be taken:

1. Press the Start Button and select the Control Panel.
2. Open the Programs and Features applet.
3. In the new window select Turn Windows features on or off located in the left pane.
4. Uncheck Remote Differential Compression.

After doing this your file transfers will be faster!

Increase Battery Life of your Laptop

The actual life of a laptop battery will vary with computer usage habits. In a survey by chipmaker Intel, 57% of laptop users said they wished their batteries lasted longer. And that is wishful thinking, according to Isidor Buchmann, president and founder of Cadex Electronics in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He suggests that although batteries become about 10% more efficient every year, the average PC's power needs also increase by about the same amount. Result: The average battery life is still painfully short (just two to three hours for most laptop models).

The more you use physical devices - which require more electricity to operate - the more of the battery's power you can expect to consume. The devices that create a larger power drain are the hard drive, the floppy drive and the CD-ROM.

Here are some tips to extend the life of your laptop battery:

1. Power down the display

Lowering the brightness may give you as much as an extra hour of runtime. And to increase even more the lifetime of your battery lower the screen resolution and color depth. This will decrease the workload on the GPU, thus extending the battery runtime.

To change this settings follow the steps below:
a. Open the Windows Start menu and click the Control Panel
b. Open the Display menu
c. In the new window click the Appearance tab. Under the Advanced button you can disable extra features like ClearType fonts and fade effects which will cut down on the CPU’s power consumption
d. Now go to the Settings tab
e. Here adjust the color depth to 16 bit. This is more than enough in office and internet applications.

2. Turn off unused devices

Many new notebooks provide a hard-wired On/Off switch for the Wi-Fi radio for this reason.
To save even more power go to the Control Panel, select System-->Hardware-->Device Manager, and disable the following items: Ethernet adapter, infrared transceiver, and Bluetooth radio . You should do this beacause having Bluetooth enabled and not using it actually consumes quite a bit of power.

3. Decrease hard drive activity

Defragmenting your hard drive regularly will decrease the frecuency with which your hard disk has to spin, therefore the battery will last longer. This is due to the fact that defragmentation optimizes the placement of the data on the drive and when a program makes a request for certain data it can be found more quickly.

Another way to decrease hard drive activity is to set your paging file to a fix value, and this value should be around 1.5 times the amount the RAM you have installed on your computer.

To set the paging file go to the Control Panel and click through System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> Virtual Memory Change.

4. Disable startup items

Startup items are programs that load into memory every time Windows boots up and cause other open applications to spill over virtual memory and adds to the CPU load, shortening battery runtime.

5. Condition the battery

Battery memory is where the battery becomes conditioned to run for less time than it is designed to run. Say for example, you run your computer on battery for an hour and then you plug it back in to let it recharge. The battery will become conditioned to run only an hour before it runs out of juice.

To correct Battery Memory problems, you must completely drain the battery and recharge it. To completely drain your battery, you must go into your Windows Control Panel and select Power. Then you must turn Power Management Off. Next, you must go into your BIOS and make sure that if there is a power management setting there, that you turn it off as well. In most cases, once you are inside the BIOS, you will highlight Power Management and press Enter. Then locate the item Hibernation at Critical Battery, and by using the Minus sign, change the setting to Off. Once these steps have been completed, then use your Escape key to return to the top level menu, and select Save Settings and Exit.

Once you have completed turning off the power management in both the BIOS and the Operating System, you must unplug the computer, turn the computer on and let it run until it completely runs out of electricity. Then you should charge the battery for 12 hours. At the end of the charging cycle, then run the computer again until the battery is dead, and then charge the battery for 12 more hours. You should repeat this process four times, before returning the computer to its original power management settings.

A great little tip to keep in mind is that if you do keep your laptop plugged in for an extensive period of time REMOVE the battery. Let it discharge and give it a break. This will extend your battery life quite a bit.

Another way to condition your battery is to keep it cool. It's best to use (and especially charge) your batteries at room temperatures. Extreme conditions can drain your battery quickly.

Registry Cleaners

When a computer is used for doing various tasks we generally deal with various kinds of programs, softwares and many other necessary things related to computers and thing to realize is that everything is made up of Files. So files are the building blocks of any kind of program or software or game or any other possible thing in a Computer. Every File has an extension written as 'filename.estension'. This extension is abbreviated to three characters and written after the file name. This File Extension only distinguishes a particular kind of file with another type.

Knowing about file extensions are very important while using a computer. When we install a program we inevitably deal with the Registry of the Computer, because as we install a software or just simply add an image to any folder it gets updated in the registry. That is why the most number of problems that occur due to File Extensions happen due to Registry errors. Here is an example for you, suppose you install a media player which you set as the default media player for your PC. Then suppose one day you uninstall that software, then does the computare change the Default media player to the previous software that you were using. The answer is NO.

This is how Registry Errors occur and files of a particular kind of extension do not open because of these kind of errors. For not letting this happen it is very necessary to keep your registry clean and updated. For these purposes Special softwares have been made which are called Registry Cleaners. There are various Registry Cleaners availlable in the market and on the internet which are mostly freeware. Download a Registry Cleaner here.

Wikipedia Rival : Knol by Google

Google opened a new service to the public recently called Knol . The company announced it last December. Knols are articles about specific topics, written by people who have knowlodge about those subjects.

The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol article will have an author or group of authors who will sign the article with their name. With "moderated collaboration", Google introduced a new method for authors to work together.

Google also made an agreement with the New Yorker magazine which allows any Knol author to add one cartoon per knol from the New Yorker's cartoon collection.

"Knol has been described both as a rival to encyclopedia sites such as Wikipedia and Scholarpedia and as a complement to Wikipedia, offering a different format that addresses many of Wikipedia's shortcomings. The non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, which owns the name Wikipedia and the servers hosting the Wikipedia projects, welcomed the Google Knol initiative saying that "The more good free content, the better for the world."

While Wikipedia articles are written collectively under a "neutral point of view" policy,Knol will highlight personal expertise by emphasizing authorship and, like articles provided on Squidoo, HubPages, oondi.com, and Helium.com, knols will contain the personal opinions of the author." (Wikipedia.com)

Knol can be found at knol.google.com.

Make the Google Logo Dance!!!

You may have heard about many google hacks like the one in which you can place your two fingers just above the two O's of Google and after a few seconds, the O's would vanish. The one that I am going to write about today is a bit more funnier. After you complete doing this, you will find the Google logo dancing all over the screen.

Step 1. Go to www.google.com, it must be Google.com and not Google.org or Google.ro or other top level domain other than the one asked for. If you can't access Google.com due to any reason the you can find it at this link: http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en

Step 2. Delete the URL address present in the URL bar or the navigation bar and paste this code:

javascript:R=0; x1=.1; y1=.05; x2=.25; y2=.24; x3=1.6; y3=.24; x4=300; y4=200; x5=300; y5=200; DI=document.images; DIL=DI.length; function A(){for(i=0; i-DIL; i++){DIS=DI[ i ].style; DIS.position='absolute'; DIS.left=Math.sin(R*x1+i*x2+x3)*x4+x5; DIS.top=Math.cos(R*y1+i*y2+y3)*y4+y5}R++}setInterval('A()',5); void(0);

Step 3. After you press enter after entering the code you will see the google logo dancing all over the screen. Try it out.

One more thing I would like to add is that this trick can be tried out on any website.com but all may not work.

Step 1. Go here and download AnyTV.

Step 2. Install the software and after installation the interface you find in this application is extremely simple, with a list of content you can watch. You can find all the channels in the world and you can browse by genre or country.

Step 3. Interesting options are to add a channel to favorites to browse them easier. If you see a non-working channel you can flag it. Also rate the channels you are using.

Step 4. Enjoy watching and do tell me whether this info was useful to you.

One last thing I would like to add is that the TV might not work properly if you have a slow internet connection but the radio works fine even if the connection is slow.

Earn from Web Hosting.....

A web hosting service is one which allows people to have their own web space and create a website. A free web hosting service is a web hosting service that is free, usually where one can earn by placing advertisements. Free web hosts usually provide a sub-domain (yoursite.example.com) or a directory (www.example.com/~yourname). In contrast, paid web hosts will usually provide a second-level domain along with the hosting (www.yourname.com). Many free hosts do allow use of separately-purchased domains. Rarely, a free host may also operate as a domain name registrar.

Another type of web hosting service is the one which has an annual or a monthly charge. If someone pays the desired amount by a web host then they get the desired domain name. By reading this you will wonder that these web hosting companies earn a lot. I f you think so, then you are absolutely correct, because this is a multi-million dollar industry. Their main aim is to provide the users the maximum benefit. The few of the most promising web hosts that are present in the market are InMotion, WebHostingPad, Globat etc.

Now after hearing the money factor you must be wondering how to venture into this business. Well to venture in this business there are some tips that one should follow. If you want to make good money from the internet then this is the work to do. To understand how to make this work successful one should go through some web hosting articles or web hosting tutorials which are usually availlable on the intenet. Actually these tutorials are quite easy to follow and this work is quite easy to implement, so in other words Web Hosting is an easy source of income from the internet.

Want to make Vista shut down faster? - Read this !!!

When you use Windows Vista for the first few days you see that the shut down time is not really a problem. But as time passes by you will see that slowly and gradually the shut down time of Windows Vista increases considerably and takes a toll on your patience.

So, here is a Registry tweak that helps make your Vista experience a lot better.

Step 1: Open the Registry Editor by going to the Start Menu, and typing regedit in the Search bar and then pressing Enter.

Step 2: Within the registry editor navigate to the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control"

Step 3: Now, Edit the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="20000" by right clicking on the key and selecting Modify.

The Default setting is at 20000 milliseconds (20 seconds). Just remember that the default settings are the safest settings for your computer.

It is a bit risky to change this value as this is a system setting. But you can lower it in 4 seconds increments to see what is the best value that works for you.

Generally it is recommended not lower the value more than 3-5 seconds because if you do this you can cause your computer to shut down improperly or lose data while shutting down.

I hope this tweak was useful to you and please comment on what your observations were.
